Meige's Syndrome Associated with Neuroleptic Treatment : a Case Report

چکیده
Meige (1910) described an idiopathic syndrome characterized by blephrospasm, and involuntary movements of the lower face, neck and jaw (Casey, 1980; Tolosa et al., 1979). 3 T h e typical feature of this syndrome is involvement of orbicularis oculi muscle. Dur ing the initial stages an increased rate of blinking is noted, and later in the course of disease uncontrollable eye spasm occurs. T h e spasms assume a tonic form (blephrotonus) and involve rhythmic contractions that obstruct vision. The blephrospasm can last from several seconds to many minutes and can be triggered by an at tempt to look upward or by stress. Since blephrospasm disrupts vision and activities that depend upon vision, such as driving a motor vehicle, the condition causes considerable disability. Recent l i terature (Ananth et al., 1988) reveals that long term neuroleptic therapy can also induce Meige's syndrome.

Olanzapine-Induced Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome
Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) is a rare but life-threatening idiosyncratic side effect resulting from neuroleptic drugs. NMS mainly occurs in patients treated with high-potency typical antipsychotics, but rarely caused by atypical antipsychotics. Although NMS is less common with atypical antipsychotic, but it seems that its incidence is rising due to increased administration of such drug...
متن کاملCase report on clozapine-associated neuroleptic malignant syndrome
ABSTRACT This article summarizes the clinical manifestations of one case of clozapine-associated neuroleptic malignant syndrome and discusses its diagnosis, predisposing factors and treatment based on a literature review. Early identification and treatment is critical to lower the mortality of clozapine-associated neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
متن کاملMeige's syndrome
Meige's syndrome consists of idiopathic blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia. The exact etiology is not known and various hypotheses have been proposed for its causation. The hypothesis suggesting dopaminergic and cholinergic hyperactivity is most widely accepted. There is no curative drug for Meige's syndrome although a variety of treatments have been proposed. We report a case which respo...
متن کاملA Case Report of Guillain – Barre - Like Syndrome Associated With Olanzapine Hypersensitivity Reaction
Introduction: Olanzapine (Zyprexa) has become one of the most commonly prescribed atypical antipsychotic drug in Iran, at least in part due to its low potential to cause extra-pyramidal side effects. Case: A 54-year-old man, who was a known case of schizophrenia from 10 years ago and within the recent years, was under periodic medical treatment by antipsychotic drugs. Conclusion: Neurologi...
متن کاملCushing’s syndrome associated with typical, peripheral pulmonary carcinoid tumor and N2 lymph node metastasis: case report
Background: The bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumor accounts for 1-2% of all adult malignancies of the lung and 20-30% of all carcinoid tumors. Cushing’s syndrome is the result of chronic exposure to increased concentration of exogenous or endo-genus cortisol hormone, and it is generally associated with central obesity, metabolic syndrome, and hypertension. Treatment is based on decreasing cortiso...
